IEP

Stands for Individualized Education Program, a term defined by IDEA.

In public schools, an IEP is written with measurable annual academic and functional goals for a student with disabilities. It is not a daily lesson plan but a guideline meant to meet the individual student’s needs. It is written with input from the school district and the guardians of the child, and sometimes the child themselves. It should include any additional services such as speech therapy or personal assistance that the child may need.

The IEP should include:

  • a statement of the student’s current academic and functional performance;
  • measurable academic and functional performance goals for the year;
  • a description of how the student will meet the goals;
  • a statement of supplemental services needed by the student;
  • a statement of any accommodations needed to measure the student’s progress;
  • a statement of any situations or classes where the student would not participate with nondisabled children;
  • and dates for the start of services and projected duration of services.

On first instance, use IEP, which stands for Individualized Education Program. On all other instances, the acronym IEP may be used. Use the abbr code when writing IEP:
