un-

A prefix that changes the meaning of the word to present the opposite of the word without the un- prefix. Do not hyphenate after the prefix. Examples:

  • un- plus affordable creates unaffordable, meaning not affordable
  • un- plus warranted creates unwarranted, meaning lack of official support
  • un- plus witting creates unwitting, meaning not knowing or not intended
  • un- plus adorned creates unadorned, meaning plain or simple
  • un- plus invited creates uninvited, not invited
