U.S. state and territory abbreviations

U.S. states and territories have two abbreviations: the standard abbreviation and the postal abbreviation. Use the standard abbreviation when naming the state or territory after the city such as in text or in datelines. Use the postal abbreviation only in a complete addresses. If the state or territory stands alone in text, spell out the state name. The same rule applies to U.S. territories.
