council

The word council — spelled c-o-u-n-c-i-l — means an advisory, deliberative, or legislative body of people formally constituted and meeting regularly or an assembly or meeting for consultation or advice. People who sit on a council are council members.

Examples:

  • The council meets on Tuesdays.
  • The Bloomingberg City Council voted 9 to 2 in favor of the new measure.
  • The organization formed a teen leadership council.

Do not confuse with counsel, counselor. They are not interchangeable.
