counsel, counselor

The word counsel — spelled c-o-u-n-s-e-l — means advice, given formally, such as in therapy, legal advice, etc.

Examples:

  • The therapist counseled the patient in cognitive techniques to reduce anxiety.
  • As your attorney, I counsel you against making self-incriminating statements.
  • Accountants often counsel their clients to keep better records income, taxes, purchases, and charitable giving.

A person who provides advice is called a counselor. A lawyer conducting a case is also called counsel.

Do not confuse with council.
